I am very happy and thankful to have been endorsed by 7 of the 8 endorsing clubs at the Travis County Multi-Club endorsement meeting on Thursday night. Thank you to the members of the following clubs: Black Austin Democrats, Austin Tejano Democrats, Capital Area Progressive Democrats, Capital City Young Democrats, Texas Environmental Democrats, Circle C Area Democrats, and Northeast Travis County Democrats.

These endorsements show the strength of my grassroots campaign, and I have earned nearly twice as many organizational endorsements as any of my three opponents. Of course, endorsements are nice, but this campaign has always been about the voters of Travis County, and how we can work together to improve the way justice is done.

I will work just as hard on the bench as I have while campaigning, and I will do my very best to live up to the trust that these endorsing groups have placed in my candidacy for judge of the 299th District Court.

I am very grateful to have received the endorsement from the first major Democratic club to endorse in the race for the 299th District Court, the South Austin Democrats. In the past few years, I have worked within the club on a number of issues, and I am happy to have so many friends and supporters within their ranks.

As I have done for the past eight months, I will continue to take this campaign to the voters of Travis County – this race won’t be decided by a select few in the courthouse or in the elite political circles of Austin. Democratic voters in all parts of the county have a tremendous choice to make, and I pledge to educate as many as possible about the importance of this court, this race, and my campaign.

Thanks again, South Austin Democrats – I’m so proud to have your endorsement!

I begin this with a note of sadness, because I have recently learned that one of Travis County’s most accomplished judges and beloved Democrats, Charlie Baird, has decided not to run for re-election to the 299th District Court. Judge Baird has had a distinguished judicial career, both on the Criminal Court of Appeals and in the 299th District Court. There are many, including myself, who will miss his presence on the bench.

I am very excited, however, because I have decided to move from pursuing the 147th District Court bench to seek Judge Baird’s empty seat on the 299th District Court. After speaking with friends, family, and supporters, I believe this is the best move for Travis County. There is no appreciable difference between the courts – they both deal with felony criminal cases, and I will be able to work for justice in the exact same way as I would be able to work for it on the 147th.

We have run an excellent campaign thus far, and nothing about that is going to change. I still believe in taking my case to the voters themselves, educating citizens about the duties of the court and the importance of participating in the judicial process. I am proud of my campaign: We have more than 450 public supporters (including 25 Democratic precinct chairs) from many different communities in and around Austin.

In the five months since I announced my campaign, I have engaged thousands of voters at club meetings, through community organizations, on the phone, and in their neighborhoods. In the month of November alone, my campaign knocked on 3,168 doors in a dozen precincts, spoke with 973 voters at those doors, and received commitments for 152 yard sign locations. My staff and I will continue to campaign hard.

Cliff Brown, my former opponent, has run an excellent race and been a formidable, yet respectful adversary for the 147th bench, and I wish him the best of luck. With Judge Baird’s departure, the 299th will be vacant and in need of a strong, dedicated jurist. I am making this decision because I believe I can deliver the courage, compassion, and commitment that Travis County demands and deserves from its judges.

It remains to be seen whether or not I will draw an opponent for the Democratic Primary in this new race for the 299th, so your support is more crucial now than ever. I am looking forward to a spirited and exciting campaign, and I would love to earn your vote.

On Saturday morning I participated in the 2009 NAMI walk of Austin. The event is designed to encourage awareness of mental illness and to raise money for treatment options that so often go underfunded or unrecognized.

In my work as the Mental Health Prosecutor for the District Attorney’s office, I see cases every day where just a little bit of treatment or care could greatly improve the outlook for many people currently wrapped up in the criminal justice system with no way out. I believe it is extremely important to recognize the instances where non-violent criminal offenders are suffering from mental illness and to attempt to divert those individuals out of our warehouse-style prison system. I’m proud of the results I’ve achieved in just a short time since the position was created. As judge of the 147th criminal district court, I would do everything within my power to continue this important work.

It’s not too late to make a donation to NAMI – every dollar counts.

Over the past three months, I’ve been out in the community, visiting Democratic clubs, meeting voters, and trying to bring new folks into the judicial process. I believe our justice system is a cornerstone of our society, and one of the main goals I have for this campaign is to educate voters and to give people a chance to participate.

With that in mind, I’m excited to announce the opening of our campaign office! It’s located right near downtown at 806 West 10th Street, and it will be a great place to use as a base to get our information out to voters around the city. Right now, the office will be open from 11-6 every day, so stop by if you’d like to have a chat with me or my campaign staff. I am firmly committed to a campaign that seeks to go beyond the doors of the criminal courthouse and out to the voters themselves.

Ultimately, this election is about results. It is about the tangible results that I have produced throughout my nearly two decades of public service, and it is about the results that I will produce for you on the 147th bench.

Since I began work on the felony mental health docket at the District Attorney’s office, I’ve significantly reduced the amount of jail time served by the mentally ill and the mentally disabled. My goal as the felony Mental Health Prosecutor is to divert non-violent, mentally ill offenders out of the traditional criminal justice system, which isn’t working for them. These people aren’t the usual criminals – they are sick, and they need our help. By presenting more treatment options and working with the mental health community, we can save lives and save money, all while reducing recidivism.

Please join me in my campaign for judge. Signing up as a public supporter takes only a minute, and by lending your voice, we can change the way justice is done in Travis County felony criminal courts to make it more effective and more humane.
